Our three-year training programme for technical graduates provides you with a comprehensive introduction to various areas of Shell’s business and operations. The technical area of the Shell Graduate Programme within Utilities, Water, Energy and Heat Transfer Engineering offers a robust platform from which those keen to become pioneers in their field can establish a long and fulfilling career.

Utilities, Water, Energy and Heat Transfer Engineering

Utilities, Water, Energy and Heat Transfer (UHT) systems are applied in many of Shell’s businesses, including Upstream, Downstream, Deep Water, Heavy Oil, Integrated Gas and Unconventionals, and as such, the discipline offers you exciting and varied career development opportunities. You will get the chance to innovate by using UHT-specific technologies to ensure our assets are safe, highly reliable and cost competitive. This requires teamwork with frequent interactions with engineers from adjacent disciplines.

Roles and responsibilities

UHT Engineers make an impact on our business by undertaking a variety of responsibilities, including:

  • Shaping conceptual design of utilities, water and heat transfer systems in our greenfield and brownfield assets
  • Managing project development for power and steam production, industrial gasses, fuel systems, water preparation and treatment, furnaces and heat exchangers
  • Partnering with specialised engineering contractors during detailed engineering and implementation of the project
  • Commissioning and start up
  • Troubleshooting activities and recognising performance improvement opportunities for our assets
  • Carrying out site master planning and reliability reviews
  • Targeting energy efficiency reduction opportunities, thereby reducing the CO2 footprint
  • Developing of new technology, either in-house or in partnership with vendors and scientific institutes

Your responsibilities could include:

  • Delivering technical support in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Undertaking site visits
  • Overseeing delivery from contractors

Training and development

Future assignments

Learning will be part of your job throughout your career and opportunities for development will come via classroom and electronic learning, coaching and on-the-job training.
You’ll establish a solid basis for your technical career by building proficiency in one of the sub-disciplines of Utilities, Water, Energy or Heat Transfer. Subsequent broadening of your experience in other areas of the UHT discipline and beyond is possible. As your career develops you can expect roles with deep functional expertise and technical leadership.

Once you have completed the Shell Graduate Programme, you’ll continue to develop your technical skills through the two-year ‘Shell Advanced Technical Programme’. This includes the outlining of an individual development plan, tailored to your and the business’ needs. Progress on your development is monitored in regular review meetings with your supervisor and a discipline representative.
