SPDC – The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria joint venture (SPDC JV) focuses on oil and gas production in the Niger Delta. The joint venture has the largest acreage in the country and operates a leased area of 31,000 square kilometres. It produces more than half a million barrels of oil per day on average with additional capacity to produce more.

SNEPCo - Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company

Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo) pioneered deep-water oil and gas production from the Bonga field in the Gulf of Guinea where depths reach more than 1,000 metres. When Bonga began production in 2005, it increased Nigeria’s oil production capacity by 10%. Today, nearly one-third of Nigeria’s deep-water production comes from the Bonga and Erha fields.

SNG – Shell Nigeria Gas

Shell Nigeria Gas Ltd is a fully owned Shell company incorporated in 1998 for the downstream distribution of gas to industries in Nigeria. SNG is part of the Shell Energy business line in Nigeria which covers gas, power, renewables and energy solutions for industrial and commercial customers. SNG’s mission is to provide its customers with a clean, reliable, low-cost alternative to liquid fuel, and to assist in building a stronger Nigerian economy. SNG currently operates a growing world class gas transmission and distribution network of over 138km across the country.

NLNG – Nigeria LNG Limited

NLNG accounts for about 7% of the world’s total LNG production and is a joint venture between four natural gas suppliers: NNPC (49%), Shell (25.6%), and subsidiaries of Total (15%) and ENI (10.4%). NLNG processes and exports liquefied natural gas (LNG) and Shell provides technical services to NLNG with approximately 20 staff members seconded to support operations.

Shell and Milieudefensie settle long-running case over oil spills in Nigeria

Following the judgments of the Court of Appeal of The Hague on 29 January 2021, Shell and Milieudefensie have negotiated a settlement for the benefit of the communities of Oruma, Goi and Ikot Ada Udo in Nigeria, impacted by four oil spills that occurred between 2004 and 2007. The settlement is on a no admission of liability basis, and settles all claims and ends all pending litigation related to the spills. Under the settlement, The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC), as operator of the SPDC joint venture, will pay an amount of EUR 15 million for the benefit of the communities and the individual claimants.

This week, claimants in the Kiobel matter in the Netherlands withdrew their appeal, marking an end to the Kiobel proceedings. The District Court of The Hague had dismissed all claims against Shell in the Kiobel matter in its final ruling in March 2022.
