For more than 60 years, Shell has invested in Nigeria’s economy and the Nigerian people. Together, we have built robust oil and gas businesses and contributed to neighbouring communities. Our commitment remains strong, even as the content of our asset portfolio changes. Our ambitions align with Shell’s Powering Progress strategy and support Nigeria’s vision to provide reliable, affordable power to its people.
The Nigeria Briefing Notes reflect our pride in the work of Shell Companies in Nigeria, the progress that we have achieved and the contributions we have once again made to communities. In 2022, we committed US$1 million to support relief efforts following severe floods, funded more than $5.6m in academic scholarships, and completed the final phase of our Oloibiri Health Programme, which has already helped over 18,000 patients, and All On, our impact investment company, which brings energy to off-grid communities, has now committed US$23.6 million to a portfolio of 46 renewable energy companies.
We will continue to clean up oil spills, despite the challenges arising from the illegal actions of third parties, such as sabotage and crude oil theft. The clean-up and remediation in the Ogoniland community of Bodo is expected to be completed by the end of the third quarter of 2023, with around 87% of the area having been remediated during 2022 and close to 340,000 mangrove seedlings now planted. We remain committed to supporting the clean-up efforts led by the Nigerian government’s Hydrocarbon Pollution and Remediation Project (HYPREP) which was established following the United Nations Environment Programme’s 2011 report.

Increasing access to affordable quality health care
Shell Companies in Nigeria seek to help increase Nigerians’ access to health services, expand health insurance schemes and strengthen health systems by working with key stakeholders, including government, community leaders and civil society organisations.
