SPDC’S Gbaran – Ubie Project Achieves Gas Production Milestone

The Gbaran - Ubie integrated oil and gas project in Bayelsa State recorded one billion standard cubic feet of gas per day (bscf/d) production on February 5, 2011, ahead of schedule.
The project, initiated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) achieved first oil and gas in June 2010 with 200 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d).
“The news from Gbaran – Ubie keeps on getting better,” said SPDC MD, Mutiu Sunmonu. “The project is on course to significantly increasing Nigeria’s oil and gas production while at the same time, delivering great benefits to the host communities.”
Work began on the Gbaran - Ubie project in 2005 and at its peak, is expected to produce one billion standard cubic feet of gas and up to 70,000 barrels of oil per day. The project currently produces about 217,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. At the peak of construction in 2008, the project created employment for almost 6000 people. SPDC signed four Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) covering 44 communities in the area as part of a comprehensive community development programme.
Gbaran - Ubie is one of the largest oil and gas projects in Nigeria, with facilities encompassing five oil and gas fields in a 650-square kilometre area. The project will help reduce gas flaring from nearby fields and provide natural gas and oil for export and gas for electricity generation in Nigeria.
