In 2008, 56 high performing final year students in Geology, Geophysics and Physics departments of four universities in the Niger Delta (University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, Federal University of Technology, Owerri and University of Benin) participated in the inaugural Shell Geosciences Summer School. The programme involved lectures, group discussions, syndicate practical sessions, interactive sessions and practical exercises, with discipline leads of Petroleum Engineering and Geosciences functions constituting the faculty.
The success and learnings from the summer school prompted Shell to conduct two Summer Schools – Geosciences and Petroleum Engineering in 2009. 60 high performing final year students in Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science/Engineering disciplines from the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Federal University of Technology, Owerri and the University of Benin participated.
